Acute Care Surgery Fellowship Program

NRMP# 2918442F0

This unique opportunity within the Division of Acute Care Surgery is designed to train board-eligible or board-certified surgeons who are seeking training in Trauma, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care. The fellowship will provide advanced training in the initial resuscitation, operation, and ongoing care of patients with life-threatening surgical diseases. This training prepares the Fellow to function with advanced skills suited for either an academic or clinical career in Acute Care Surgery.

The division of Acute Care Surgery chose not to pursue AAST designation for Acute Care Surgery year. This allows fellows to pursue individualized specialty experiences in Cardiac Surgery, Vascular, Hepatobiliary, and more to supplement their prior experiences. The educational philosophy of the Acute Care Surgery year is graduated independence. The faculty will guide fellows to grow as a junior attending leading the provider team during initial resuscitation, operative intervention, and post-operative care.

Fellows will have 6 – 7 in-house call and will work 2 weekends per month.

In 2014, an International Fellowship component was established in partnership with the Universitario de Valle in Cali, Colombia. It presents a unique month-long, advanced penetrating operative trauma, advanced burn, and emergent general surgery experience to all second-year fellows in our ACS fellowship. We have developed international relationships that will also offer administrative, research, and trauma system development opportunities that will afford fellows personal and academic growth in Global Health roles.

All fellows completing the Surgical Critical Care year at RWJMS can continue as Acute Care Surgery fellows. In a case where the Surgical Critical Care fellow chose not to continue, the Acute Care Surgery Fellowship position will be open for new applicants. The applicant must have completed an ACGME-approved residency in General Surgery and received fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care by the start date.

Interested applicants should apply using the Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery Fellowship Application Service (SAFAS): https://safas.smapply.io
