About the Department of Medicine
About
The Department of Medicine of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick is composed of approximately 180 paid and more than 450 volunteer faculty members organized in 11 divisions covering the major medical subspecialties.
In the years since the integration between Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, our Department has been undergoing a renaissance as we increase the number of faculty members and leaders in our department, allowing us to expand our cutting edge research, increase our unique academic approach to patient care, and provide medical education to the future of medicine: our medical students, interns, residents, and fellows.
We urge you to explore our website, and learn more about us and what makes us proud of our excellence.
Michael B. Steinberg, MD, MPH, FACP
Professor of Medicine
Interim Chair, Department of Medicine
Meet the Chair
Dr. Steinberg is the Interim Chair for the Department of Medicine, Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) and Medical Director of the Rutgers Center for Tobacco Studies. He maintains an active research career in the areas of tobacco treatment interventions, has published over 75 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and has conducted studies funded by NCI, NIDA, RWJ Foundation, and the NJ Department of Health.
In his Departmental role as Vice-Chair for Research, he not only maintains his own research activities, but coordinates clinical research across the Department. A key aspect of research in an academic medical center is creating a network of collaboration and shared resources. Dr. Steinberg helps bring researchers in the Department of Medicine together with like-minded investigators throughout RWJMS and across other RBHS units. In addition to fostering funded researchers, the Vice-Chair’s role is to connect trainees interested in learning how to develop research skills with existing research projects and faculty mentors. Through this ongoing cycle of research expansion and training, the RWJMS Department of Medicine strives to develop both the innovations of today and the investigators of tomorrow.

Research Activities
Research is a key mission pillar of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The Department of Medicine is committed to the advancement of scientific discovery in a wide variety of medical areas. Our faculty are actively involved in basic science, clinical, translational, and population-level research across each of our 11 Divisions. These research studies are funded by various sources including the National Institute of Health and other federal agencies, State and Foundation funding organizations, and numerous pharmaceutical industry-sponsored trials. Faculty from the Department of Medicine collaborate with other researchers here at Rutgers Biomedical Health Sciences, throughout the larger Rutgers University, and from many other research institutions across the country and the world. Trainees in the Department of Medicine (medical students, residents, and fellows) are encouraged to become active and valuable participants in all aspects of our research mission.
