The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health educates medical students and residents to meet the healthcare needs of our diverse population while providing personalized, high-quality, comprehensive, collaborative, and continuous care to individuals, families, and communities. Our interdisciplinary, collaborative research and scholarship are both leading-edge and reflective of the philosophy and practice of family medicine and primary care.
The department's academic and clinical programs serve more than 100,000 students, professionals, and patients each year in hospitals, medical offices, post-acute and long-term care facilities, homes, schools, businesses, and communities throughout New Jersey. With outstanding expertise in clinical care, community service, medical education, and an excellent track record in quality of care focused primary care research, the department serves as a valued resource for New Jersey and the nation.

Academic Programs
The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health offers two outstanding Family Medicine Residencies:
- Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) in New Brunswick, NJ
- CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, NJ
We offer a National Research Service Award (NRSA) two-year Primary Care/Health Services Research Postdoctoral Fellowship that combines research in a multidisciplinary setting with the option of earning a master of public health (MPH) degree.
We also offer Clinical Fellowships in geriatrics, sports medicine, and reproductive and gender health.
From Lab to Practice
The Family Medicine and Community Health department’s collaborative research fellowships provide opportunities in many areas for postdoctoral fellows in health services research. We offer opportunities to work and learn with the department’s nationally recognized program in primary care and health services research.
The longitudinal research curriculum includes journal clubs, a scientific lecture series, ongoing workshops and other hands-on research experiences as well as supervision and collaboration in independent research projects. All residents graduate with a peer-reviewed, Evidence-Based Medicine publication.
Our Centers and Networks
The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health operates several centers and networks including The Center for Healthy Families and Cultural Diversity, Rutgers Network of Affiliated Family Medicine Residencies, and the New Jersey Primary Care Research Network, which fosters justice and equity in health care.
Clinical Services
The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health has both outpatient and inpatient offices throughout New Jersey. Our clinical programs include acupuncture, comprehensive family medicine, geriatrics maternity care, sports medicine, student health, and women’s health.
