About the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences
Message from the Interim Chair
Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine. I am privileged to lead an accomplished faculty, staff, and resident team all of whom are focused on our mission to improve the lives and health of women. We are proud of our academic heritage and we are devoted to the pursuit of excellence and innovation in clinical care, research, scholarship, and advocacy. Our faculty are actively engaged in women’s healthcare policy development and we value our strong connection to the community. The department is committed to providing the highest quality of patient services; to educating health care providers and scientific investigators; to training our future doctors; and to conducting and promoting research to advance knowledge in our field.
Our department is located at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We are a member of Rutgers Health Sciences. Rutgers University is one of the largest and oldest academic institutions in the country. We are centrally located within the state, which makes it convenient to both Manhattan and Philadelphia. We serve a diverse population of women and we encourage close collaboration across clinical disciplines. Our education and training programs attract the best and brightest students, thus ensuring that future generations of exceptional healthcare providers and researchers will be provided to serve our community. We seek to attract talented and motivated individuals who hope to make a difference in the world.
Our faculty, residents and fellows are involved in a wide range of clinical, translational and basic research projects. Our department actively collaborates with investigators at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), the Child Health Institute (CHI) and Eric B. Chandler Health Center. The department maintains busy clinical divisions in general obstetrics and gynecology and all the subspecialties including maternal fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology and family planning. Additionally, we have established programs in robotic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, adolescent gynecology, and women’s wellness. We provide personalized healthcare to meet the needs of patients across their lifespan.

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences has been an active partner in achieving significant gains by Robert Wood Johnson Medical School with respect to equity and inclusion. For years, members of our faculty have dedicated professional and personal resources to address the needs of the underserved and under-resourced communities locally, regionally and internationally through research, education, clinical care and community engagement activities. We are home to the Women’s Health Institute and the Urban Global Scholars Program, initiatives designed to promote awareness of injustice and disparity within diverse communities in order to further our social justice mission. Our residents and faculty attend the Eric B. Chandler Health Center, a Federally Qualified Heath Center (FQHC), providing high quality ambulatory women’s health care to our urban community including patients who are uninsured.
The faculty is committed to insure that constructive changes occur within the department that are both meaningful and sustainable. In 2020 we launched initiatives focused on equity and inclusion that include,
- A Committee on Equityy and Inclusion that convenes its meetings monthly and reports its activities quarterly to the department chair. The committee is charged with monitoring medical students, housestaff and faculty relationships related to professional conduct within the workplace.
- Calendared educational activities that nurture a supportive and receptive environment for conversation and dialogue that leads to culture change. This includes grand rounds and journal clubs that directly address disparity, inequities and prejudice that exist in healthcare and medical education.
- The active pursuit of opportunities to advance initiatives for the diversification of our faculty, residents and students and supports new systems of accountability for diversity recruitment and retention.
- The establishment of a strategic relationship with the Office of Equity and Inclusion as well as the Department of Education at RWJMS that reports our progress and documents our collective efforts at reform.
- Increased academic support and professional development services for under-represented minority students, residents and faculty including appropriately assigned mentorship.
- Support of empowerment workshops that address implicit race and gender bias, as well as microaggressions. These workshops also explore strategies to mitigate bias and build a climate of respect and tolerance.
- Continued efforts to build a respectful and safe relationship between the faculty, residents and our students including a clerkship report card designed to assess perceptions of racial or cultural inequities within our department.
These initiatives are meant to provide tangible evidence of our commitment to identify and take measurable actions against bias and prejudice within our community. We are hopeful that our collective voices will serve to reflect the very best versions of ourselves. All of us are committed to making our environment a better place to learn, to work, and to live.

Residency
Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program
The residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology is designed to provide the resident with a well balanced exposure to the entire field of women's health care. Upon graduation from our program, the resident will have developed the attitudes, skills, and knowledge required to practice general obstetrics and gynecology in a capable and confident manner. In addition, the resident will be exposed to the various sub-specialties of our field in order to kindle an academic interest in fellowship training if desired.
Fellowships
Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine
The fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine is a three-year fellowship designed to provide comprehensive exposure to all areas of our discipline. The program provides exposure to a breadth of opportunities in prenatal diagnosis and ultrasound-based procedures, maternal critical care, basic and advanced obstetric surgery, clinical and translational research, reproductive epidemiology, and patient safety and quality.

Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology
The Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences Department has one opening for a fellow in their Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program and will be in the Match this upcoming recruitment season.
The Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program is a 3-year program, with 1 year of dedicated research and 2 clinical years focusing on inpatient and outpatient management of patients with gynecologic malignancies. At the completion of training, graduating fellows will have gained competency in all major gynecological/oncological surgical procedures, chemotherapeutic and radiotherapeutic management with gynecological malignancies; urologic and bowel procedures as it relates to gynecologic malignancy management and be able to provide excellent care to patients who present with preinvasive diseases as well. The fellow will also become an excellent consultant and be able to provide recommendations as well as manage patients who present with gynecologic malignancies and those that need complex gynecologic surgical procedures.

This is a virtual event that takes place from 8:00 AM – 9:00 am (EST) where people can attend virtually via WebEx.

- Apply best practice in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Women's Health Institute (WHI) is recognized for its outstanding contributions to women’s health, their family’s health and community wellness. The WHI supports women’s health research conducted by faculty and learners. Clinical trials are encouraged and facilitated by the WHI team through the building of strong, multi-disciplinary research programs.
