About the General Surgery Residency Program

Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School’s Department of Surgery is proud to have a growing and ever improving residency in general surgery. Our mission is to train future academic leaders in general surgery and its associated fields. To that end, we have a vigorously active and broad reaching true general surgical experience. All of our six-year categorical residents spend at least 12 months (in between the second and third clinical year) in dedicated research and professional development. It is possible for a resident to spend additional years on an individual basis.

In conjunction with the enormous improvement in the overall research funding and activity of our department, our residency has also become one of the strongest academic surgical programs in the country. Many if not most of our graduates continue further training in the field of their choice at many other premier institutions. Our full-time and community faculty are deeply committed to the education of our surgical trainees. I invite you to look over the many sections of this residency web and discover what we have to offer. Please do not hesitate to contact me if further information is required.
