The Office of Education and Academic Affairs spans activities from premedical programs through the professional development of physicians. Undergraduate medical education programs include prematriculation programs, the Offices of Admissions, Students Affairs, Multicultural Affairs, Registrar, Simulation, and core faculty of the Preclerkship Curriculum and Clerkship Curriculum. There is a Rutgers Health Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Office of Graduate Medical Education and a Rutgers Health Continuing Education Office.

Message from the Senior Associate Dean

Welcome to Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. I am so delighted to introduce you to the school culture and the collective philosophy of our educational faculty and staff. On behalf of my colleagues, I want to share our excitement about the best part our learning environment: the teacher-learner interaction. Our learning environment is suffused with observation, two-way feedback, guidance and coaching, peer support, individual and small group inquiry, and instruction and support for self-direction. Our educational values are mutual respect, trust, communication, and accountability: faculty trust that students aspire to develop their professional identities and become the best physicians possible; students trust that faculty will partner with them as they develop their professional identities and have students’ best interests front and center in all that they do. We as faculty hold ourselves to the highest standards as we prepare you to care for patients. We teach you:

  • To integrate foundational knowledge and critical thinking into clinical practice and to use the best evidence;
  • To communicate in a patient and family-centered fashion;
  • To become health systems-focused and collaborators with other health professionals;
  • To form your professional identity and leadership skills;
  • And to develop the resilience and adaptability you will absolutely need to succeed.

We take learner feedback seriously and use it to improve our educational program. We “close the loop” so that you are informed of the effects of your feedback.

We believe feedback fuels growth and thus promote that our learners be in a growth vs. a fixed mindset.

Finally, we have adopted a system, precision learning, that enables personalized educational experiences for all learners through our attentive teaching, self-regulated/active learning and assessment. Precision learning tailors resources and activities to the needs of learners at the right time. We want to ensure that students engage with these resources.

And we could not be prouder of those who graduate from our medical education program.
