Office of Graduate Medical Education

The Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) is the central administrative office for residency and fellowship programs at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, responsible for administrative functions pertaining to residents and fellows, including the maintenance of permanent records, credentialing, processing payroll, and loan deferments. The office ensures all programs adhere to accreditation requirements, Rutgers University policies, resident contracts, Committee for Interns and Residents (CIR) and New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners requirements.

Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, through the GME office and the Graduate Medical Education Council, is also responsible for maintaining affiliation agreements with other institutions participating in GME, monitoring the accreditation status of participating institutions, ensuring that formal quality assurance programs are conducted at participating institutions, monitoring eligibility and selection of residents, monitoring all aspects of resident appointment, monitoring resident participation in educational and professional activities, and monitoring the residents’ work environment.

The school tracks program outcome measures, conducts extensive internal reviews of each GME program, and ensures that each program teaches and assesses the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) general competencies:

  • Patient Care
  • Medical Knowledge
  • Practice-Based Learning
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills
  • Professionalism
  • Systems–Based Practice

Graduate Medical Education Council

The Graduate Medical Education Council, led by the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, oversees all ACGME-accredited and unaccredited programs at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The council is charged with reviewing the quality of GME trainees' training and working environment within the institution and the participating sites as regulated by the accreditation agencies, such as ACGME, American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, and the National Resident Matching Program. The council is also tasked with establishing policies and procedures for the training programs.

The council reports to Rutgers Health Graduate Medical Education Committee and obtains guidance and approval to implement any changes necessary for the improvement of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School GME programs.

Council meetings take place every month via Zoom. Invites are sent via the council listserve. To participate, please contact the GME office.
