Division of Cardiology

Overview

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology has board certified pediatric cardiologists and specialized staff who are committed to the care, treatment, and management of congenital heart disease in the prenatal, infant, childhood, adolescent, and young adult stages of life, in addition to providing outpatient evaluations for cardiac concerns, and overseeing the education of pediatric residents and medical students during their respective pediatric cardiology electives.

Clinical Services

The Division of Cardiology operates the Children’s Heart Program of New Jersey at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, a center of excellence, providing comprehensive services to infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with acquired and congenital heart disease. Echocardiology, echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, Holter monitoring, and stress testing are among the services provided to our patients.

In addition, we have an extensive fetal program to diagnose and manage fetal cardiac abnormalities during pregnancy, providing appropriate treatment, family counseling services and planning strategies for pregnancy, delivery and postnatal care.

We work with our clinical affiliates in the region to provide seamless management of patients requiring cardiac surgery, interventional catheterization and electrophysiologic testing.

Our pediatric cardiology outpatient clinic in New Brunswick provides evaluations for heart murmurs, palpitations, chest pain, and fainting episodes along with other cardiac concerns, five days per week in New Brunswick.

Education

The third- and fourth-year medical student elective is intended to cover the basics of cardiac physical examination, hemodynamics, electrocardiogram interpretation, congenital cardiac pathology, and hemodynamics along with exposure to echocardiography and other imaging modalities.

The goal of the residency elective is the understanding and recognition of cardiovascular signs and symptoms, develop a differential diagnosis, provide initial evaluation and management, and to determine referral needs as appropriate. Topics covered include: heart sounds and murmurs, age-related changes in vital signs, cardiac arrhythmias, electrocardiology, available imaging modalities for cardiology, pre and post natal cardiac circulation, and key principles related to use of cardiovascular medications. Trainees gain an understanding of the presentation, treatment and prognosis of various cardiac conditions. They also participate on inpatient rounds and consultations.

The division provides didactic lectures for numerous lecture series, programs, and conferences throughout the year. Cardiology division members also are routinely involved as resident advisors and medical student mentors. Shadowing opportunities are provided to interested college students and medical students.

Community Health

Division Director Dr. Joseph Gaffney's ongoing participation with the Gift of Life International Program and Heart Care International has taken him to Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and most recently Uganda. Efforts over the past 15 years have expanded from medical missions to participation in establishing a sustainable cardiac program in the Dominican Republic and recent efforts at developing sustainable cardiac programs in El Salvador and Uganda.
