About the Department of Pediatrics
Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Pediatrics at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The Department’s mission is to protect and ensure the health and well-being of all children. We are dedicated to advancing the field of pediatrics through patient services, research, education, and advocacy. We are committed to providing multi-disciplinary family-centered care with respect, compassion and the highest standards of excellence. The faculty and staff in the Department of Pediatrics conduct clinical, research, educational and outreach activities which directly and indirectly impact the lives of children and their families in central New Jersey, throughout the state and regionally.
Our residents are the heart of our department. Their vitality, curiosity and dedication to our patients reminds the faculty daily why we chose this profession. Our residents are a diverse and ambitious group headed by our dedicated medical education leaders. As you embark on this journey of apprenticeship know that we will be there to help you succeed. Your success equates directly to ours! In fact, one of our goals is to create a program where you will want to come back and work alongside us.
Our program is unique in that we are centralized in a strong Children’s Health campus where you can explore your various interests. The partnerships between the Department of Pediatrics of RWJMS and Child Health Institute of New Jersey, Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and PSE&G Children's Specialized Hospital along with the many partners of Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health opens a door of exploration to many career paths.
Finally, I want to assure you that our team is focused on harmonizing your development as a pediatrician with a respectful work life balance. It won’t be perfect but working together WE will constantly innovate and make this an important focus of our mission.
OK, so let’s have fun… isn’t that why we chose peds?
Sincerely,
Vikas Dharnidharka, MD, MPH
Chair and Professor

Research
In addition to teaching and clinical activities, faculty, fellows and residents are involved in basic clinical research. Some of the many research project opportunities include:
- pediatric HIV;
- nephrotic syndrome;
- developmental follow-up of premature infants;
- control of neonatal respiration;
- necrotizing enterocolitis;
- transdermal drug administration;
- autism;
- Tourette’s syndrome;
- childhood rheumatological diseases;
- learning and motivation in the infant;
- sexual abuse in children;
- new treatments of childhood cancer;
- respiratory mechanics in children with lung disease;
- molecular genetics;
- emergency room utilization;
- and screening for language delay.
Residents are required to complete a scholarly activity prior to graduation. Projects involving quality improvement and community advocacy have been completed to fulfill this requirement and opportunities in the Pediatric Clinical Research Center, located within the Child Health Institute, are available to residents.
Pediatric Clinical Research Center (PCRC)
The Pediatric Clinical Research Center (PCRC) offers direct connections to a wide array of experienced clinical and basic scientists at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Child Health Institute of New Jersey and the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University.
The mission of the center is to:
- Expand access to innovative clinical trials and novel treatments for New Jersey's children.
- Establish and support a state-of-the-art training environment for medical, nursing, and pharmacy students, residents and fellows.
- Logistical Assistance: We assist investigators in acquiring and launching new studies, and provide recruitment and data collection assistance if needed.
- Regulatory Assistance: We assist investigators in completion of regulatory documentation, IRB submission and oversight.
- Outreach: We assist investigators in developing agreements with pharmaceutical corporations, Clinical Research Organizations, and Site Management Organizations.
The PCRC is housed within the Child Health Institute of New Jersey (directly adjacent to the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital) and is a fully staffed and equipped clinical research facility capable of conducting both inpatient and outpatient pediatric clinical trials.)
The Pediatric Clinical Research Center (PCRC) is an academic clinical research center within the Department of Pediatrics at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The PCRC offers direct connections to a wide array of experienced clinical and basic scientists at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Child Health Institute of New Jersey and the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University.
The PCRC provides the infrastructure and core services designed to facilitate clinical research throughout the entire children’s campus.
Active Studies
-
This is a multi-center, randomized trial to compare the effectiveness of a treatment regimen including cyclosporine (CSA) to a regimen including mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and oral pulse steroids in inducing the remission of proteinuria in participants with steroid resistant FSGS. Both regimens contain an ACE inhibitor and alternate day low dose prednisone. In addition to this, another study will assess the safety and tolerability of two novel drugs, a TNF-a antagonist and a PPAR-g agonist, in patients with resistant FSGS. Participants must be between the ages of 2-40 years old at the onset of signs or symptoms of FSGS to join these studies.
-
cKiD is an observational, epidemiological study of children ages 1-16 years old with mildly to moderately impaired kidney function. The primary goals of this study are to determine the risk factors for kidney function decline and define how this progressive decline impacts neurocognitive function and behavior; the risk factors for cardiovascular disease; and growth failure with its associated morbidities. Participation involves annual study visits where kidney function is measured through glomerular filtration rate-iohexol plasma disappearance. Neurocognitive and behavioral tests will also be administered and cardiovascular risk factors monitored through blood pressure and ECHO exams. Annual visits will last for up to four years.
-
This is a 5-year study that aims to examine the role of genes in the development of autism. Children that are 4 years old or older and have been diagnosed as having autism and at least five family members will be enrolled. The child's mental health and development will be assessed through physical examinations and clinical assessments, which will be videotaped. Family members will receive scheduled home visits and will be asked to donate blood or cheek cell samples. A battery of intelligence, standard behavioral, language, and reading tests will also be administered to each member. Such tests will last 3-5 hours, while testing the entire family takes most of the day. All subject contact, from screening through testing, should be completed over the course of a month.
-
This open-label, single-arm, multi-center, out patient study aims to evaluate the safety and tolerability of a combination tablet containing both sumatriptan succinate and naproxen sodium in the long term treatment of migraine in adolescents 12 to 17 years old. Subjects will use an e-diary to measure quality of life and treatment satisfaction. Treatment will last up to 12 months.
-
The object of this study is to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of ceftobiprole in patients three months old to eighteen years of age, who require therapeutic or prophylactic therapy with systemic antibiotics. Ceftobiprole is a broad spectrum IV cephalosporin, with activity against MRSA, currently in phase 3 clinical trials. It is also active against Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Morganella morganii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and various other bacteria. Total duration of the study is approximately 18 days with three separate phases: a 24-48 hour screening phase, a 2 day open label treatment phase, and a post treatment phase.
-
This project is aimed at studying the association between a child's weight and asthma, and will occur in conjunction with "A New Weigh", a 12-week, multidisciplinary weight management program designed for overweight children between ages 3 to 18 years, being conducted by the Adolescent Division at the BMSCH at RWJUH. In addition to asthma screening, the children will also be screened for sleep problems and allergies.
