Division of Endocrinology
Overview
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology provides expert diagnostic and therapeutic care to children and adolescents with common and rare endocrine disorders. This comprises a wide range of conditions including diabetes mellitus, and disorders of growth, sexual maturation, thyroid function, pituitary function, and calcium and phosphorous metabolism.
Community Outreach
We provide multidisciplinary support to meet the unique needs of our diabetes patients, their families, and their caregivers including teachers, school nurses, and coaches. We offer individual and group classes to ensure comprehensive education and self-management skills.
Our physicians represent the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital as pediatric endocrine consultants for the State of New Jersey Endocrine Consultants Task Force in the area of newborn screening for congenital adrenal hyperplasia and thyroid disorders.
Research
Our faculty are actively involved in a project called TrialNet. The purpose of the study is to screen relatives of patients with type 1 diabetes for the antibodies associated with a higher risk of developing type 1 diabetes. Autoantibodies are a sign that the immune system may be attacking the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
Education
Our faculty are dedicated to medical student and resident education. Faculty serve as preceptors for clinical clerkships (medical students) and block rotations (residents), lecturers, group facilitators for case discussions, and mentors.
