Division of Cardiology

The Children’s Heart Program of New Jersey at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) is a center of excellence, providing comprehensive services to infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with acquired and congenital heart disease.

Overview

The division has mentored students who have expressed interest in pediatrics and provides ongoing student lectures. The division also mentors college students interested in medicine who participate in the Summer Clinical Internship Program at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

About Us

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology has an extensive fetal program to diagnose and manage fetal cardiac abnormalities during pregnancy, providing appropriate treatment, family counseling services, and planning strategies for pregnancy, delivery, and postnatal care.

Our outpatient office provides evaluations for heart murmurs, palpitations, chest pain, and fainting episodes along with other cardiac concerns. Clinics are held five days per week.

The services provided by the cardiology department include:

  • Fetal, pediatric, and young adult echocardiography,
  • EKGs
  • 24-hour Holter monitoring
  • Transtelephonic cardiac rhythm monitoring
  • Cardiodynamic exercise testing

Education

The 3rd and 4th year medical student elective continues to be highly subscribed with excellent feedback. It is intended to cover the basics of cardiac physical examination, hemodynamics, EKG interpretation, congenital cardiac pathology, and hemodynamics along with exposure to echocardiography and other imaging modalities. Cardiology division members are routinely involved as resident advisors and medical student mentors. Shadowing opportunities are provided to interested college students and medical students.

  • The residency's major focus is outpatient care and evaluation, physical exam, review of laboratory data, discussion of treatment; prognosis, etc. The medical students are involved with inpatient rounds and consults while attending lectures and case conferences about pediatric and fetal cardiac medicine.

  • The goal of the residency elective is to help students:

    • Understand and recognize cardiovascular signs and symptoms
    • Develop a differential diagnosis
    • Provide initial evaluation and management
    • Determine referral needs as appropriate.
  • Topics covered include:

    • Heart sounds and murmurs
    • Age-related changes in vital signs
    • Cardiac arrhythmias
    • Electrocardiology
    • Available imaging modalities for cardiology
    • Pre and post-natal cardiac circulation
    • Key principles related to the use of cardiovascular medications.

Students should gain an understanding of the presentation, treatment, and prognosis of various cardiac conditions. They also participate in inpatient rounds and consultations.

  • The division provides didactic lectures for the summer core resident lecture series, the cardiac pathophysiology lectures series for 2nd-year students, and the annual perinatology imaging conference.

This is along with noon conferences, case conferences, and joint conferences with perinatology and neonatology, maternal-fetal medicine conferences, emergency medicine conferences, and cardiovascular conferences throughout the year.

Community Health

Dr. Gaffney’s ongoing participation with the Gift of Life International Program and Heart Care International has taken him to Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and most recently Uganda. Efforts over the past 15 years have expanded from medical missions to participation in establishing a sustainable cardiac program in the Dominican Republic and recent efforts at developing sustainable cardiac programs in El Salvador and Uganda.
